SLIP39, also known as Shamir’s Secret Sharing for Mnemonic Codes, is an advanced method for securing cryptocurrency seed phrases. The SLIP39 Wordlist

The SLIP39 wordlist consists of 1024 carefully selected words, each mapped to a specific 10-bit value. This list is designed to be clear, unambiguous, and easy to communicate, making it ideal for both verbal and written transmission of seed phrase shares. The words are chosen to minimize confusion and transcription errors, ensuring that each share can be accurately recorded and later reconstructed.

SLIP39 words meet following critera:

• The wordlist is alphabetically sorted.
• No word is shorter than 4 letters.
• No word is longer than 8 letters.
• All words begin with a unique 4-letter prefix.
• The wordlist contains only common English words (+ the word “satoshi”).
• The minimum Damerau-Levenshtein distance between any two words is at least 2.
• The similarity between the pronunciation of any two words has been minimized.

Unlike the BIP39 wordlist used in standard seed phrases, the SLIP39 wordlist is specifically tailored for the Shamir’s Secret Sharing scheme. This means that each word in a SLIP39 share carries more information, allowing for a more compact representation of the cryptographic data. The SLIP39 also has different words than than BIP39 (but some of them are on both lists).
